This production, in which language weaves a fascinating tapestry, can possibly leave some confused as to location and intent of a scene. It was decided that all scenery would be onstage at all times and that performers would engage in the changing from one scene to the next. I was given the concept of “etherealness” of the play’s world. To advance this concept I chose to have towers of steel covered in light fabric to help physicalize each of the four locales called for in the script. These towers, when lit correctly, looked either monolithic or lightweight. Platforms on stage were framed and legged in steel tubing to give the effect of floating.
